If I thumb up sites which address unpleasant realities this is not an endorsement of that reality. I live in the UK but do not support British foreign policy.

Peregrine falcons are the world's fastest bird swooping at speeds of 200 mph. Surprisingly they are moving in to Britain's town centres.

Pictures inside a disused mine; why is this so creepy? Many of the shots just show crystal growth for crying out loud. I've seen other photographs of abandoned rustbelt sites, they have a sort of modern Gothic quality, these are amongst the most impressive.

A short article on Amazigh rugs from Morocco, made by nomadic Imazighen (Berbers) who live in tents made from black goat hair: the base of the tent has a loom built in which they use to create the famous beautiful rugs for their own use and for trade.

The Imazighen (Berbers) have their own language and script, the artists featured on this page are self taught developers of Amazigh calligraphy.

This picture of a seal comes from astrophysicist Tony Travouillon's website. His gallery of pictures from 'Dome C' in Antartica includes many penguin pictures, much ice and snow and some expedition pictures too but inevitably the animals and the environment are the stars of the show, unless you're a keen astronomer. There's also an appealing short video of Adelie penguins.
