If I thumb up sites which address unpleasant realities this is not an endorsement of that reality. I live in the UK but do not support British foreign policy.

Timbuktu today

Currently known for being remote and difficult to reach, Timbuktu was an intellectual powerhouse centuries ago. At last the surviving manuscripts from a collection which could have probably rivalled that of the lost library of Alexandria are being studied, preserved and exhibited. This is just in time as the sands are encroaching on the town. This page carries news of the various projects and has many links where you can find out more. Many thanks to Imorgen for the send.

Ubiquity: the new thing from Mozilla labs enables you to create your own mashups without web development skills. This really promises to open up how you use your computer. I'm really tempted to download this and play around despite it being release 0.1, which I suppose means that it's an alpha, despite me being quite a coward over new stuff, and despite me wanting to enjoy having a computer which for the first time in weeks seems reasonably stable and seems to have returned to speed.

Timbuktu may disappear under encroaching sand dunes "The local University of Sankore had 25.000 scholars at it height. The amount of bound manuscripts produced gave the city the name of the Alexandria of Africa. All manuscripts were in the Arabic script, some are masterpieces of Arabic calligraphy. All these treasures have long been hidden and kept under very bad circumstances. Conditions have changed now with the help of American and European funds the huge collection is being cataloged, digitized and preserved under better conditions."
