If I thumb up sites which address unpleasant realities this is not an endorsement of that reality. I live in the UK but do not support British foreign policy.

T-Mobile wants to copyright the colour magenta. Latest in a line of companies seeking intellectual and commercial ownership of something it didn't even invent or discover (the human genome and bismati rice come to mind. Vile.

Every year between 12 and 24 thousand people in Britain die prematurely from poor air quality caused by vehicle emissions. This may be equal to the rate from alcohol misuse and is twenty to forty times the rate from passive smoking in the workplace. We are in breach of EU and WHO policy but, unnecessary car use is only rarely discouraged.

I am Mordechai Vanunu,
the man who told the truth about Israel's Nuclear Weapons Program in 1986 and paid with 18 years of my life in Israel Prison . I was released in April 2004, but Israel denied me my human rights of free speech and freedom movement. I have not been allowed to leave since 1986. Now it is 2008.
On July 8, 2008, I will return to court, to appeal a new 6 months prison sentence for speaking to foriegn Media, since my release 2004.
I am asking the Media to report on my case and on the efforts of Norwegian Lawyers and citizens to grant me asylum.
Please write to newspapers on behalf of a very brave and wonderful person.

I have posted this old video to mark the coming US elections. Bush and his crew are toast; I'm expecting whichever new set of frauds gets in to emote and warble vacuously about their fresh new start and how happy they are to have this opportunity to improve the lives of Americans and people round the globe. They'll parade any prominent people who aren't male/old money/Wasp, line their pockets and live in the pockets of business interests. There'll be phony consultations, committees and celebrity endorsements to sell yet more surveillance 'to protect ordinary people' and yet more people in the third world will have their lives ruined beyond redemption. After a few years they'll be totally discredited and the opposition will probably get back in.
How do I know all this? Well my US friends, in some things perfidious Albion still leads the way. Conservative Margaret Thatcher was Britains's most hated Prime Minister ever and rightly so. She presided over the destruction of British Social Democracy, the emasculation of trade union power and the creation of a permanent underclass. The small British fascist parties shrivelled into near invisibility: Thatcher had stolen most of their best stuff and she was in power. The IRA's bombing of the Conservative annual Party Conference led to cheers and smirks all round in many workplaces, schools and colleges. Rejoice? you bet we did. Despite it all, the Conservatives had a run of election victories, all but one of them fronted by this bird of ill omen.
What happened next? New Labour that's what. The original party had always tended to compromise more than most of the European Left parties but still maintained a distinct political programme, as far as domestic issues went anyway, and generally could claim to be the party which represented the interests of the socially and economically disadvantaged. With many of the Conservative party's erstwhile supporters repelled by inner city decay and rioting, mass unemployment, financial instability and social insecurity there was hope that the bad old days would end. "Swing" votes became critical. There was a problem here. In a polarised society with a two party system supposedly representing the interests of the two parts, thinking people know damn well which way they're going to vote. Waverers are usually politically stupid. If political parties lack vision in such a situation the election focuses the parties on chasing the votes of the least informed or most feeble minded and selfish sections of the electorate. In it's effort to win marginal seats the Labour Party purged activists, trumpeted it's Special Relationship with the US (Blair meets the Clintons), eviscerated it's political programme and ran TV ads featuring people such as rich suburban bankers explaining that they wouldn't have even considered voting for the Labour Party unless they were 100% convinced that they personally would not lose a penny. New Labour was born, or alternatively, Thatcherism was born. After all, Thatcher was only Thatcher and one would expect her to be well Thatcherist, having the Opposition steal her core policies was her triumph.
Before New Labour even won an election they were widely referred to as Tory Plan B.

New evidence is emerging on the fate of Holocaust hero Raoul Wallenberg who saved many thousands of Jews bound for extermination camps at great personal risk; he was shaft of light in a time of terror and depravity.
Peter Malkin, who captured high ranking Nazi official Adolf Eichmann, painted Raoul Wallenberg's portrait under the title "With the same hands" Source
